Car Driving Safety Rules [ Views: 8 ]
| Operating a motor vehicle is often one of the most dangerous activities that people perform on a regular basis. A car crash can occur at almost any time, but following driving safety laws and rules can reduce the chances of getting into an accident and suffering injury. Specific driving laws may vary by state, but many rules of thumb can apply to any driving situation.
Seat Belts
Wearing seat belts is required by law in many areas around the world. A seat belt can help prevent the driver and passengers from hitting their head on the dashboard or passing through the windshield in the event of a crash. It is important to wear a seat belt at all times and make sure that the seat belt is properly fastened. Many belts consist of both a lap belt and a shoulder strap; failing to use the shoulder strap may place more strain on the body in the event of an accident. Seat belts may not be required for passengers in the back seats of cars by law, but all passengers should wear belts to maximize safety. Young children should be secured in an appropriate child safety seat or harness.
Speed Limits
Driving at or slightly below the speed limit is important to increase safety; it also prevents a driver from being ticketed for speeding. The faster you drive, the less response time you will have in the event that you need to abruptly stop, turn or avoid an object. Your speed also determines the potential damage that can be done to your vehicle and its occupants. An accident that occurs at lower speeds will likely result in less damage and injury than one that occurs at high speeds.
Cell Phone Use
In some areas it is illegal to drive while using a cell phone. Cellular phones can be a distraction while driving, especially if used for texting while driving. If you must operate a cell phone while driving, carefully pull over and park the car to make or answer a phone call and resume driving when the call is complete.
Car Maintenance
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration mandates a long list of rules that car designers must adhere to in order to ensure the safety of the occupants. Although a brand new car likely will not have any large safety issues, which may be more probable in a used car, wear and tear can create problems. It is important to maintain your car using the maintenance schedule provided to you when you purchase the car. Regular oil changes, wiper blade replacement and tire replacement can help avoid problems that may arise due to neglect.
